HANDMADE REPRODUCTION

Hearts were struck historically from silver blanks in the shape of the sacred heart of Jesus, and were likely minted as votive offerings of the Catholic Church. These specially mint-made pendants are somewhat enigmatic to historians and archaeologists however, they were likely worn by Catholic priests and perhaps the laity in the New World during the 17th-18th century. Worn as a reminder of Christ's love, love tokens in general, or perhaps even as amulets for protection, the original heart-shaped cobs are extremely rare, and highly sought after by collectors. This is a faithful reproduction of one of the rarest and most beautiful hearts of the Potosi silver mine in South America.

One or two of these coins was about equivalent to a days wage for a sailor. This type is dated to 1669, in what is infamously known as the 'Age of Piracy'.
