Aegina/Aigina Drachm (Greek coin 5th century BC)
Loggerhead sea turtles of the Mediterranean are the same species found in the Caribbean.
During the 5th century BC, Greek coins were commonly designed bearing emblems representing their specific city and region. The sea turtle coins from the once powerful, seafaring island of Aegina are some of the oldest coins in the world. These 'turtles' were the first coins struck in Europe.
